FOPIR Membership Report Historic Race Chairman Gary Bockman found a way to boost FOPIR membership in two ways. He required all entrants to have a FOPIR sticker on their cars. The only way to get a sticker was to join FOPIR at our booth. Gary followed up with a very compelling speech at the Saturday night team dinner that not only moved many to join, but resulted in two very large donations. Way to go, Gary! Many thanks to FOPIR volunteers working at the FOPIR booth: April May Pemberton, Cindy Pemberton, Marc Prentice, and Tom Pullen. Thanks to Doug Buchner who recruited at the PIR booth and to Greg Meythaler who recruited at the car corrals. Email problems. If you aren't getting the newsletter and provided us with an email address at the time you joined, please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it We will re-add your email address to our distribution. FOPIR's policy is to safeguard your contact information and will not share or sell for any reason. If You Can't Read This, You're a New Member Thanks to the wonderful and tireless work of volunteers and the assistance of major event promoters, FOPIR has gotten thousands of members this race season. Hot Summer Nights, Beaches Cruise In, Champ Car, Portland Historic Races, Rose Cup, and other events attract hundreds of thousands of fans. No surprise that those fans want to support, maintain, and enhance PIR. FOPIR has added more part-time people to enter member data into our mailing lists, but the backlog keeps growing. Please let recent members who aren't getting our enewsletter know that we will get them onto our distribution list soon and definitely in time to receive a holiday greeting card from FOPIR. Many thanks to the volunteers who have grown FOPIR into one of the largest member organizations in Oregon. PIR needs wheels PIR's mini pickup truck is just about worn out. If you have a pickup in running condition you would like to donate, please call Gary Bockman at 503-288-4571. The gift may result in a nice tax deduction. Dealers, please consider a "loan" of a truck and get a nice rolling advertisement at the track, plus regular recognition from FOPIR. Bicycle Racing Heats up for summer at PIR on Monday and Tuesday Nights Watching the Tour de France, and wondering how can I get involved in bicycle racing? Oregon has some of the best bicycle racing in the nation and most registered (Oregon Bicycle Racing Association) bicycle racers per capita. An easy way to get involved in racing is to stop by PIR on either Monday or Tuesday nights (every Mon and Tues night through end of August). Just
bring your bike, helmet and sense of adventure! Races are run for all
categories from novice tobike2 advanced levels. As you might know, the racing
course at PIR is a flat and wide 1.9-mile loop on high-quality pavement for
cycling. The raceway circuit is closed to all car traffic. Racing starts at
6:00 p.m. for the first categories. Come check it out some Monday or Tuesday evening. Learn more about bike racing in oregon at the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association's website: www.obra.org Portland Montly Magazine Features Bicycle Racing at PIR! Portland

think of Portland International Raceway, "quiet" isn't typically the
first word that comes to mind. Revving engines, squealing tires and screaming
fans are more the order of the day. Except Mondays, when dozens of area cyclists
clad in brightly colored spandex and aerodynamic helmets speed around the empty
track - their whirling wheels making about as much ruckus as a swarm of bees.
For 15 years, Monday Night Bike Race series has attracted road racers and
triathletes to Portland's premier speedway, where they can pedal out their
yellow jersey dreams - or if they're beginners, get pointers from more "experienced riders" in a serene silence broken only by a smattering of
applause at the finish line. |
